Twelve people in the U.S. have tested positive for the Wuhan coronavirus that has killed over 600 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s update on Friday.

Some hospitals are turning to a special robot that can kill pathogens with xenon light pulses.

LightStrike Germ-Zapping Robot from Xenex, a Texas-based company, uses pulsed xenon to quickly deliver germicidal ultraviolet (UV) light throughout hospitals and public places.

“We have thousands of robots in use in over 500 facilities around the world,” Xenex CEO Morris Miller told CNBC on Wednesday. “We’ve been contacted by about 200 of them that are using them to disinfect emergency rooms and other spaces where they have suspected coronavirus cases while they’re doing the test to determine whether they are coronavirus or not.”

The robot’s Full Spectrum™ light destroys viruses, bacteria, and bacterial spores in about five minutes per room.

The Xenex technology has been broadly adopted by the Department of Veterans Affairs after it was tested by Dr. Chetan Jinadatha, Chief of Infectious Disease at the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System, who concluded in a research paper that the pulsed xenon ultraviolet light “appears to be superior to manual cleaning alone.”

In 2014, Xenex negotiated an exclusive patent license agreement with the VA for an improvement jointly developed by Dr. Jinadatha.
