Aerospace’s Fast Pressure Sensitive Paint Technology

A lot can potentially go wrong when you drop a heavy bomb from a jet traveling faster than sound. That’s why every new aircraft and weapon combination undergoes rigorous certification that includes ground testing, wind tunnel evaluations, and flight testing. Measuring pressure across different surfaces is one of the most important testing components.

In an effort to reduce costs and speed up the certification process, the Air Force awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to Dayton, Ohio-based Innovative Scientific Solutions Inc. (ISSI) to develop their ideas for a fast responding pressure sensitive paint (PSP). The technology has proven to be very successful, giving aerospace companies an important new evaluation tool that will save the DoD significant time and money.

ISSI’s fast pressure sensitive paint (PSP) technology is just one of many successful innovations enabled by the US Air Force’s SBIR and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. For more information, visit
