Economic Impact Studies

We conduct economic impact studies of DOD licensing and Small Business Innovation Research programs to evaluate their impact on the national economy and contribution to the defense mission.

Since 2009, TechLink has been conducting national economic impact studies of Department of Defense technology transfer and SBIR programs.

The purpose is to determine the extent to which these programs have contributed to new economic activity and job creation in the United States and also resulted in the transition of new technology to U.S. military use.

These studies include the first-ever economic impact analysis of a U.S. federal agency licensing program, which evaluated the outcomes and impacts of all DOD license agreements active from 2000-2011, and the first-ever comprehensive economic impact analysis of a federal agency SBIR program, which studied all Air Force SBIR Phase II awards completed between 2000 and 2013.

TechLink completed a similar study of the Navy SBIR/STTR Program in 2016, and is currently extending the Air Force and Navy studies to the entire DOD SBIR/STTR Program.
